The Winter/Spring 2025 programming for MTVarts continues to build on the organization’s mission to offer diverse, educational, and enriching opportunities in the performing and visual arts. This season’s classes focus on specialized skills such as directing, stage makeup, and audition techniques, alongside foundational courses like acting, theatre basics, and vocal training. Classes will cater to a wide range of age groups, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity.

CLASS: Master Class with Christopher Hartman and Mary Harris (Ages 12+)

DESCRIPTION:

MTVarts’ Shakespeare Masterclass offers a dynamic exploration of Shakespeare’s works through the lens of the Michael Chekhov Acting Technique. Led by experienced instructors Mary Harris and Christopher Hartman, this course delves into the rich text and timeless themes of Shakespeare, combining technical precision with imaginative play. Participants will learn to embody Shakespeare’s characters with emotional depth and authenticity while using Chekhov’s principles of atmosphere, psychological gesture, and the actor’s ideal center to elevate their performance. This masterclass is perfect for actors seeking to connect with Shakespeare on a deeper level and enhance their craft through innovative, proven techniques.

CLASS: Acting II – Scene Studies

DESCRIPTION:

This intermediate acting class focuses on scene work using the Michael Chekhov Acting Technique. Students will explore Chekhov’s approach to character relationships, physicality, and emotional truth, applying these principles to selected scenes from plays. The course emphasizes collaboration, imagination, and the actor’s creative process, allowing participants to deepen their understanding of text analysis and performance. By the end of the course, students will have gained tools to approach scenes with confidence, clarity, and a strong sense of ensemble work.

CLASS: Intro to Directing

This introductory directing course guides students through the essentials of theatrical direction, approached through the lens of the Michael Chekhov Acting Technique. Designed for young actors ready to take the next step, this class introduces elementary-age students to the basics of theatre. CLASS: Acting Up

DESCRIPTION:

Calling all creative minds! In this dynamic class, students will collaborate to devise original scenes over the course of two weeks, exploring the essential tools of acting: body, voice, concentration, cooperation, and imagination. Through theatre games, improvisation, and group activities, participants will bring their ideas to life on stage. The course culminates in a final showcase, where students will present their unique creations to family and friends. Perfect for young actors eager to make new friends, express themselves, and experience the magic of live theatre!

CLASS: Vocal Technique

DESCRIPTION:

This class is designed to help students unlock the full potential of their voice, whether for musical theatre, choral performance, or speaking roles. Students will learn the fundamentals of healthy vocal production, including breath support, proper alignment, and resonance. The class will also explore vocal dynamics, diction, and phrasing, tailored to the unique demands of theatrical performance. Participants will work with a variety of musical pieces to apply these techniques, gaining confidence and versatility in their singing. By the end of the course, students will have a strong foundation in vocal health and expressive singing, empowering them to approach any performance with skill and artistry.

CLASS: Audition Techniques

This comprehensive course prepares students to shine in any audition room. Covering both musical theatre and acting auditions, participants will learn how to select the right monologue or song to showcase their strengths, master cold reading strategies, and develop a confident stage presence. Students will receive personalized feedback on their pieces and work on making bold, authentic choices that stand out to casting directors. Through mock auditions and practical tips from experienced instructors, participants will leave the course equipped with the tools and confidence to make every audition a success.

DESCRIPTION:

This course explores the thrilling world of special effects makeup. Students will learn techniques to create scars, wounds, burns, and fantastical elements such as creature designs. The class will include hands-on practice with materials like latex, face paint, and prosthetics. Through guided instruction, students will develop their creativity and problem-solving skills to design and execute effects that enhance storytelling. Whether preparing for a play, a cosplay event, or simply expanding their artistic horizons, this course offers a unique and exciting challenge for budding makeup artists.
